When Andrew Kerper turned in his notice that he was leaving his full-time teacher position after 10 years of service, he had an experience that was not at all unusual. He contacted his central office and was sent a booklet of information. That was it. There was no checklist; just many different benefits decisions to make and lots of easy-to-miss deadlines.
There was no advisor to consult with during planning periods, days off, or after hours to answer some of his many questions, including questions about the pension system, sick leave payout, how to continue his health insurance, or whether or not his combined pension, 403(b) account, and Social Security would actually cover his retirement income needs.
